Sure to Bother All the Right People

Will this stir up trouble, or is it one of the greatest film roles of all time? At left, see Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., and Ben Stiller in the upcoming “epic action comedy” Tropic Thunder. Yes, there are three white guys in that picture. Downey plays a character who is a white guy cast in the role of a black man (yes, it’s very meta).

Empire has the gory details and a link to a larger picture.

I was never a fan of Downey until Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (and I’ve been pretty negative about Iron Man so far). If you haven’t seen it, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is very amusing; Downey and co-star Val Kilmer–not what you usually think of when it comes to a comedic duo–kept me laughing throughout the faux-noir crime comedy.

Come to think of it, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang also had several meta elements like the main character stopping the film to address the audience and rewind to clarify things or explain how movies of the noir type are supposed to proceed. Maybe that’s Downey’s new thing?

  1. One of the other writers on Highbrid Nation wrote about Robert Downy playing a black man in Tropical Thunder. He worries that Al Sharpton might have something to say about it, lol. Honestly as a black person I think it’s kinda cool that movie make-up has gotten to the point where you can make someone look like another race and if the pics I’ve seen of Robert Downy in costume are accurate than they did a really good job! Plus Robert is a very capable actor so I’m sure he wont come across as stereo typical or offensive. I could be wrong though.
